TEAM HISTORY
The
Almaden Swim Team began in May of 1970 when the Almaden Swim and
Racquet Club was built. At that time, the team was a summer only
operation, beginning practice and competitions in May and ending
the swim season and practices in August. The team began with
approximately 50 swimmers, many of them previous members from the
swim team at the Almaden Golf and Country Club across the
street.
In 1972, year round swimming began at ASRC
so that the team could compete with the other year-round teams in
Pacific Swimming. That year, Almaden won the South Bay Swim League
Championships, a winning streak that lasted until 1989. Almaden
continues to take part in the SBSL. Almaden has also done very well
in the Zone One South Championships, finishing in the top 5 for the
past 10 years and 2nd for 3 consecutive years (2006 - 2008). The
team has grown to about 200 swimmers.
Jerry Macedo (2007-2008 George Haines Award Winner)
was hired in 1970 as the first swim coach and club manager and
coached until his retirement in 2007. In September 2007, Almaden Swim & Racquet Club hired
Andre Salles-Cunha as Head Coach. Andre has a long history in swimming, together with a
fantastic set of accomplishments. A Stanford Graduate, Andre was
two-time PAC-10 Champion in the 100 Breast, and was a three-time
Collegiate All-American.
Swimmers from Almaden have had great success at all levels
of swimming. Our swimmers have gone on to swim in high school,
college, masters programs, National and Junior National
Championships and even at the Olympic Trials!
Almaden
is well known in Pacific Swimming as a team of fine swimmers and
great parental support. It has more carded officials than any other
team in Pacific. These are noteworthy accomplishments for a small
club. Almaden Swim and Racquet
Club has a proud history of success in the sport of
swimming.
